Most of the Batmobiles the Dark Knight drives are crazy flights of fancy that could never exist in real life, so it’s interesting that the Batman people went to a legendary designer of real race cars for the latest in Batmobile technology.
Gordon Murray designed the Formula One cars that won six world championships, then he went on to create the incredible McLaren F1 supercar for the road. So when he was given the task of creating the latest Batmobile, he came up with a design that projects Formula One design elements as they might exist in 15-20 years, including what he calls “breathable” carbon fiber.

The aerodynamics take a lot from F1, with a large rear wing, and a ground effects package with fairings around the “virtual” wheels. Power comes from an eco-friendly hydrogen fuel cell, so it looks like even the Caped Crusader is going green.
The fantasy drivetrain consists of four ‘diode virtual wheels’ powered by a combination of an on-board hydrogen fuel cell stack and lithium-ion batteries, and are capable of creating electrical force fields to ‘levitate’ the whole car 40mm above the ground. Carbon-ceramic afterburners can propel it from ‘superspeed’ to ‘hyperspeed’ in just two seconds.
Additional crime-fighting kit includes a virtually silent ‘breathable’ carbon fibre body, radar jamming system and laser blasters that double up as headlights. And while there’s room for Batman’s trusty sidekick on board, the main ‘Bat Grip’ controls recognize the caped crusader’s energy signature, so only he can drive it.

The Batmobile is powered by hydrogen, which is stored in twin tanks in its right-hand-side flanks. A fuel cell stack is on the car’s left flank and this powers lithium-ion batteries.
Instead of standard alloys, the Batmobile sits on ‘virtual wheels’. According to the technical drawings, the wheel’s force-field generators “oppose gravity and lifts the Batmobile to a levitation position 40mm above the ground”.
The car will feature in the Batman Live World Arena Tour which starts in Manchester, England on July 19 2011 with US dates to follow later.
